Hah, I've just got to 1.5 out of the 1.6 GB.
Now waiting impatiently. It will take a while to install aswell because it says it copies most of the Oblivion models and textures to a different folder so as to not mess up the original game. Basically installing Oblivion in 2 different places

Ok I played a bit yesterday and my first impression was that this is actually NOTHING like Oblivion. For a start it is much harder, there is much more AI and the dialogue (despite it's German-ness) sounds professional. Everything is much more detailed as well and proves to be a much better and interesting environment to be in.
But I still like Oblivion, Oblivion will never get old!

I managed to get it working after a while. But WOW, you can tell the amount of detail been put in. And I can stand the German part as long as all the subtitles are in English. I'm going to be having fun with this.

It's a mod for Oblivion

Well strictly speaking it's a TC (Total Conversion) as it changes absolutely EVERYTHING in the game. It's a new world with new people, places, items and stories completely unrelated to anything ES.
So basically a whole new game for free, built on Oblivion software.

They just released a version with English subtitles but still German dialogue and I don't think they are planning on an English dialogue version. I'm not sure if there's an awful lot you can do about it, sorry for being of no help whatsoever.

I watched the trailers, and read a little about it, and it looks awesome! A shame it's in German, though. Or it doesn't matter really, because my computer I use now since my other one broke down can't even run Oblivion on lowest graphics, and it only has 74GB disc space (total).

I'm learning German, and I love the idea of German voice acting with English subtitles. Gonna download it over the weekend.

Done, and in just 57 minutes, too. Now I just have to install it, which will be difficult, because I'm using Windows 7 and Oblivion is on the other, Windows XP half of my computer...

As a player who's still venturing through the lands of Nehrim, there are a few things that beginning players should be aware of.
There are only three races for you to choose from. Two human races and a sort of half-elf. No anthropomorphic races to be seen so far.
Methods of transportation (that I have seen so far) are as follows: On foot, on a donkey, or by teleport crystals. There is no fast-travel in this game. However, there are special plants hidden throughout the land that are worth going through the brush to look for.
There is a storage system in this game akin to Diablo II. A chest specifically for you sits in every city and whatever you put into the chest in one city will appear in your chests located in every other city as well. Very handy when you come across a part of an armor set and do not wish to sell them.
And when you first see the Black Troll, for the love of god, RUN.

While some may call this necromancy, I disagree as there is no conjuration skill in Nehrim.
I started playing it when I woke up this morning, and so far it's rather brilliant. The opening dungeon is really hard, but after that it eases back. A little. It's difficult and challenging and frustrating at times, but that just sort of adds to it. I haven't encountered but one bug, and it was actually pretty significant. I'm hoping it's a bizarre one-time thing since I haven't seen it since and I haven't come across it being mentioned anywhere else.
It's a big world and really beautiful, even on low settings (STUPID graphics card...). Aside from just how it looks, the style is very interesting. It's quite obviously based on Oblivion, but design choices are a lot different than one would expect playing the games. It's like coming home to find someone's rearranged all your furniture. It's familiar, it's like home, but at the same time it's completely different.
The story is intriguing thus far, but it hasn't really gotten into anything yet, so I don't actually know what's going on. Mysterious notes in the night, sneak attacks by trolls, and crazy walls of fire have decorated just the 'tutorial' dungeon so far, which is pretty cool. Weapons look to work the same as Oblivion, but magic plays like Oblivion I think only at face value. Freezing spells can actually freeze and fire spells knock you on your butt. My guy's a melee/archer type, so I think I'll be exploring magic more fully in the next playthrough.
The three choices for races are pretty simple, but interesting. Two of them are basically just updated Imperials and Nords, but the third race isn't really like anything else. A sort of cross between Breton and Altmer, if I had to choose. They're pale of skin and eye and inclined towards magic, but they don't quite have that elven look like the elves in Oblivion have, yet they do have pointed ears. I think I'm going to be one of those next game. This time I was an Imperial named Kaktos Rex. Brilliant, eh?
There also seems to be an interesting backstory involving your own character (unlike Oblivion, you have a vaguely predetermined past. You work in an Abby, in fact.) but I haven't really gotten into that so I'm not sure what that's about. It's also interesting that the side quests actually blend into the main quest at times. You may certainly skip them, but at times they seem to come about just by natural progression of the main story.
The voice acting is awesome and I feel inclined to let it play even though I don't understand but maybe one word in ten. The subtitles are perfect and at times it's even a little weird, but it's always understandable. I think they're going to have more updates on that as there are patches here and there still in German, like a few books I found an several posters decorating the first big city I found.
I'll probably post more as I keep playing as these are just my first impressions.

From what I remember, after getting out of the tutorial dungeon, I was amazed by how detailed the scenery was, definitely more than Oblivion itself. I also thought the sailing scene was a brilliant idea, something that was entirely absent in vanilla. After reaching the first real city I remember not being able to use magic under penalty of arrest. So, since my character was magic-based I continued on to the capital city, which was a lot bigger and more bustling than the Imperial City. (I found a dance club there, which was hilarious beyond words) After completing a few petty quests, I arrived at some burned down town, learned the town's backstory, and got some cool-looking armor along the way. Then I finally found a secret magical city, which continued the MQ. I'm pretty sure that's where my computer decided to go blue-screen and I had to format my drive. (The cause was unrelated to Nehrim) Anyway, I'll be reinstalling the minute I get home, and there should really be a section for this mod on the wiki.

I keep meaning to play it more but my laptop doesn't like it very much. I get much lower framerate than in Oblivion due to the amount of added detail Nehrim has (all hand made apparently).
I guess it's just a matter of playing with the settings to find a balance between quality and framerates.
Another problem is that I usually have certain performance enhancing mods on when playing Oblivion, these all have to come off for Nehrim.

Mine lags, which usually isn't a problem. It does get irritating when I'm fighting several baddies at once, however, when it drops to about 3/sec. I just hold down the mouse button and do power attacks since 90% of the time my clicking isn't accepted. That sounds like a huge complaint, but it seems like they focus more on story rather than combat, so it's actually not a huge issue.
Also, I can't believe I forgot the sailing scene. That is so ingenius. I mean, it's avery simple and brief scene, but it's absolutely brilliant at the same time. I just turned the camera to one side and watched the scenery talk whilst the guy rambled on. I just let myself be immersed in the scene. Of course, a moment later immersion was broken when the boat turned invisible upon docking and it looked like I was sitting in the water. I actually thought the boat had sank, but upon turning the camera it came back. Creepy scary.
What kind of performance enhancing mods? Some of them are compatible? If you mean like, texture replacers, well for one you don't need them. For another, Nehrim copies the Oblivion folder to a new location, minus mods, so it's not an issue anyway. Just make sure uncheck everything in the Data Files section and you should be good to go. If you mean general tweaks, they might actually be a good idea as Nehrim is kind of a hog.

I mean things like Streamline/Stutter Remover, Operation Optimization and Oblivion Polygon Overhaul. They are the ones I usually use.

Ah, I see. Well, as a rule any mods aren't compatible. I think I saw on the Nehrim forum (or somewhere) that there are a few mods that have patches made to work with Nehrim, but I can't say for sure. Personally I think the game still looks great so doesn't really need anything.
I also figured out a way to make my game run smoother, but it kind of sucks. I lowered the resolution to 800x600 and now it rarely lags or slows down at all, which means I can stop just holding the mouse button down and actually use proper attacks. It actually made the entire 'tutorial' (I started a new game) a lot easier.
So, there is a wiki for Nehrim, but it's terribly incomplete outside a sort of quest walkthrough (which I've avoided reading for good reason) which means there isn't much information on the races. So, I started six new games while ago to see what the different starting stats were. Turns out there's very little difference between races. The Alemanne (Imperial-like) and Half-Aeterna (mix between Aeterna and humans) have completely identical stats. Same health, magic, and all the same starting skills. That's interesting and disappointing because the Half-Aeterna are described as naturally gifted as magic, but they have the exact same inclination as the Alemanne, and to a lesser extent, the Normanne. The Normanne are the only ones who are any different, but the difference is negligible.
Also of note is the wiki calls the two human races Saxons and Nords, but the game calls them Normanne and Alemanne. I'm using the ones from the actual game since it's what you see constantly. It also lists Aeterna as playable, though they are not.
