Say hello to ADF Opus Version 1.2. New in this version is a text viewer for viewing simple text files. The viewer allows viewing of files that are not associated with an application under Windows, such as startup-sequences. The viewer is available through the toolbar and the main and context menus.

Additional improvements:

  • Fixed a bug that resulted in the boot block not being found during installation when creating an ADF in any directory other than Opus' root directory , caused by a silly assumption about the path to the bootblock.
  • Prevented the bootblock warning from being displayed when creating a new, bootable adf.
  • Updated help yet again for the new features and GUI elements and corrected some outdated elements.
  • Fixed two bugs reported by Eric Trinh. One that caused divide by zero errors when trying to copy zero byte files and another that reportedly causes only the first volume on a device to be displayed when opening. I would like feedback on the second one as I can't test it myself. Looking back over past bug reports, it seems that this might be the cause of problems with opening volumes reported by several other users. Well done, Eric!

Thanks to all those who continue to send suggestions and bug reports. Would all users direct correspondence through the SourceForge facilities i.e. via the following links:

as appropriate, please. This allows everyone to benefit from others' experiences, avoids repetition and makes things much easier for me to manage. It won't take much longer to use these facilities than it does to write a standard email. All facilities are available from the project page. Thanks.

ADF Opus Version 1.1 is released. This version includes several improvements and fixes including menu icons and file undeletion. The addition of file undeletion adds another new and useful function to Opus.

ADF Opus Version 1 sees the light of day. This version finally drags Opus firmly into the land of the living. It contains forty-odd changes including fixes for all known and several previously unknown bugs, implementation of almost all the outstanding features I had thought of, numerous user interface enhancements and several updates. Installer packages are now provided for both source and release versions. See the release notes or the History page in Help for a complete list of changes visible in the release version and those only affecting the source.

Version 1 is the culmination of several years' work by a number of people, especially Laurent Clévy, without whose Amiga File system encapsulation none of this would be possible and Dan Sutherland, who did all the leg work and brought his initial inspiration to life. It's also much more complete and functional than previous versions. I have tested it as much as I can on Windows 98. Any feedback on your mileage on different systems, things that work well, or not so well, will be appreciated. I still have one or two more ideas for improvements, such as implementing the undelete functions of ADFLib within Opus but the bulk is now done.

At this auspicious milestone in ADF Opus' development, I would like to thank Dan, Laurent and all those who supported and encouraged me over the years of development. A special thanks, also, to those users who provided feedback and assistance and to all who use ADF Opus and have made it a worthwhile project.

So, where to from here? I will continue to maintain this site and provide fixes and improvements as they come to hand. Dan has expressed a passing interest in the concept of a wxWindows port and that would certainly make an interesting project and open up new doors to Opus' future. Only time will tell.

Best wishes,

Gary.

Welcome to the new SourceForge-based ADF Opus web page. This will be the ultimate resting place for Opus, excepting unforeseen circumstances.

Browse the Project page and have a look at the range of facilities available. They include mailing lists, forums, news, bug tracking and task management, feature requesting, CVS and release management. The latest code version will always be available via CVS and is likely to contain changes not yet available in a release version. If you are new to CVS, check out the CVS home and the CvsGui project right here on SourceForge. Older versions of ADF Opus are available from the Project Files page.

It would be nice to see some participation by other developers making improvements or submitting changes already made to the code. Updates will have to be submitted to me for uploading into the CVS tree. Ports to other platforms or a cross-platform framework such as wxWindows come to mind. All of the ADF management code is portable, only the OS-specific GUI code would need to be changed. If anyone is interested in assisting with such things, please let me know.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the new facilities and continue to find ADF Opus useful.

Introduction

ADF Opus is a file management tool for ADF files and hardfiles. It allows you to perform most common tasks (like copying, renaming, deleting, etc.) with your ADFs without having to go anywhere near an emulator. Features include support for all filesystems (including directory-caching) high speed file copying, ability to access real Amiga harddisks and a powerful MDI interface.

ADF Opus may be used, modified and distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence, either version 2 of the license or (at your option) any later version.

Download

Most people will just want the binary archive, which contains the ADF Opus executable and documentation:

You can also download the source code if you're into that sort of thing:

You'll need Visual C++ 6 or later to compile it. You can probably talk it into compiling with the Borland/Inprise compiler if you know what you're doing. The Help requires the MS Help Workshop for compilation and the installers, Ghost Installer. The source for required libraries ADFlib, xDMS and zLib are all included in the source archive.

See the Project/Files page for earlier versions.

DISCUSSION

Overview

The Classic Support editions of Workbench 1.3 and 2.1 are made available to provide continued support to systems where the use of a newer version is not possible or desirable (e.g. for historical reasons, or for application compatibility).

System Requirements

Workbench 1.3 (two floppy disks) works on systems with a 1.2 or newer ROM ('Kickstart'). Even the oldest Amiga 500 and 2000 systems have at least a 1.2 ROM. This is the last series to support 256-KB ROM models like the Amiga 1000, which can be booted from a Kickstart 1.2 or 1.3 floppy disk.

Workbench 2.1 (five floppy disks, or a hard disk image) works on systems with a 2.04 or newer ROM. A 2.05 or newer ROM is required for IDE and PC Card (PCMCIA) support. This is the best Workbench version to expand models like the Amiga 600 to boot from hard disk or CompactFlash without needing to upgrade the ROM to the 3.x series.

Workbench 1.3 and 2.1 can boot on systems up to a 3.1 ROM ('Kickstart'), except on an Amiga 4000T model. The A-4000T, and newer ROM versions like 3.X need Workbench 3.1 or Workbench 3.X, which in the Amiga Forever Classic Support distribution include the required 'workbench.library' file.

Shared Improvements

Amiga Workbench 1.3 Adf Download

Unlike the improved Workbench 3.1 set, where a combination of ROM enhancements and additional disk space provide the opportunity for additional enhancements, differences between the Classic support edition and the original versions by Commodore are minor.

Workbench 1.3 improvements include:

  • Updated C/SetClock command (Y2K patch)

Workbench 2.1 improvements include:

  • Updated C/Version command (Y2K patch)

Hard Disk Image (Workbench 2.1 Only)

The Amiga Forever 2.1 Classic Support hard disk image is the result of a full installation from the floppy disk set.

Depending on the desired video modes, one or more monitor files may need to be copied manually from 'Storage/Monitors' to 'Devs/Monitors'.

Support for Large Disks or Partitions

The maximum partition size supported by Workbench 2.1 is 2 GB. Disks larger than 4 GB are not supported. If you need to work with larger-capacity disks, consider an upgrade to Workbench 3.1 (which may require a newer ROM).

Emulation-Specific Changes

Workbench 1.3 and 2.1 versions that are included in the emulation environment of Amiga Forever include the above modifications which are shared with the Classic Support series, plus some emulation-specific changes which are not part of the Classic Support series:

  • Added C/Shutdown command (for shutting down the session)
  • Added C/GetHostVar command (for passing data from host to guest)
  • Set default printer to EpsonQ (emulation has emulated EpsonQ printer)
  • Updated S/Startup-Sequence to support Cloanto S/AFShared-Startup
  • Updated S/Shell-Startup to support Cloanto UXCLI
  • Removed C/FF from 1.3 (due to known issues in emulation environments)

For space reasons, these additional changes were applied to the preinstalled hard disk environments only:

  • Added C/LhA command (for extracting Amiga archives)

These additional changes were applied to Workbench 2.1 only:

  • Restored licensed speech-synthesis files to Devs, L, Libs, Utilities
  • Added Devs/DOSDrivers/Speak
  • Edited SCSI_DEVICE_NAME in Tools/HDToolBox.info ('scsi.device' replaced with 'uaehf.device')

Slightly different hard disk image file names are used to differentiate between the Classic Support ('workbench-134.hdf' and 'workbench-210.hdf') and the emulation-enhanced ('workbench-135.hdf' and 'workbench-211.hdf') versions.

For more details on 'uaehf.device' vs. 'uaescsi.device' and other emulation-specific changes see:

Online Support

Each Classic Support set comes with a license key that can be used to download the same set again for recovery or update purposes. To register for support, please refer to cloanto.com/genuine.

Additional Enhancements

Workbench 1.3 and 2.1 aim to provide maximum compatibility and support for legacy requirements on even the oldest Amiga models. For this reason, only some required Y2K bug fixes have been applied. For additional enhancements, you may want to consider an upgrade to Workbench 3.1.
